MDes in Design Anthropology accredited at Swinburne University

Until now, I've had to respond by saying that we have plans without having our programs in place. This changed yesterday. It is a great pleasure to announce that the Faculty of Design at Swinburne University of Technology has just become the first design faculty in the world to offer an MDes in design anthropology. We will also offer a graduate diploma, and design anthropology is already one of the fields in which you can earn a PhD at Swinburne. We're not quite ready to advertise -- there is a bit more paperwork yet to do -- but I am happy to make the announcement, and I want to share some information about what Dori Tunstall and her team have brought together. While you can take an MSc in design anthropology in the anthropology department at University of Aberdeen, it's a traditional anthropology program. This makes us the world's second master's degree overall, but still the first from a professional design perspective. If you're an anthropologist doing pure scientific research, think Aberdeen. If you want to work at the coalface where you combine anthropological theory and methods with design methods to develop innovative, ethical and holistic solutions to the challenges of business, environment, society and culture, think Swinburne Design. Starting with core skills in research methods and studio design making, this MDes builds disciplinary knowledge in the history and theory of design anthropology and the understanding of the workings of small corporate and community groups. Students then select a specialization. Specializations include indigenous knowledge for those who want to facilitate cultural innovation with communities, cross cultural brand identity design to align organizational and client values, or sustainable design with a focus on cultural sustainability. Dori Tunstall deserves a special comment. Five years ago, Dori left a lucrative career in industry to return to academic life. She did so to accomplish two things. The first was to support the work around design and government policy that she started with Design for Democracy. This work now lives in the US National Design Policy Initiative. Yesterday, she accomplished the second when Swinburne's Academic Board accredited the MDes and the GradDip in Design Anthropology. We've had support and help from such outstanding advisors as Prof. Lorraine Justice of Hong Kong Poytechnical University, Prof. Meredith Davis of North Carolina State University, Mr. Geoff Fitzpatrick of the Design Institute of Australia, Dr. Maria Bezaitis of Intel Research, Prof. Jakob Buur at University of Southern Denmark, and Ms. Maureen Thurston of Second Road. We've also had a lot of help and support from subscribers to the AnthroDesign discussion list and the PhD-Design discussion list. Thanks to you all! Swinburne Faculty of Design's Masters and Graduate Diploma in Design (Design Anthropology) programs combine anthropological theory and methods with those of design to develop innovative, ethical and holistic solutions to business, environmental, and socio-cultural challenges. Starting with core skills in research methods and studio design making, it builds disciplinary knowledge in the history and theory of design anthropology and the understanding of the workings of small corporate and community groups. Students then select a specialization in either Indigenous Knowledge to facilitate cultural innovations with communities, Cross Cultural Brand Identity Design to align organizational and client values, or Sustainable Design with a focus on cultural sustainability. Our approach is characterized by · origins in industrial practice, · focus on small group social dynamics and networks, · multi-sensory, holistic design approach, · engagement with cultural values as sources of creativity. We emphasize what we call respectful design. In this program, Swinburne offers an on-site full-time (1.5 years, 150 credit point) Masters of Design in Design Anthropology. The program will accept only 20 full-time students per year. For those who require geographical or time flexibility, the program offers an online (1-year full time, 100 credit point) Graduate Diploma of Design in Design Anthropology.
