Dear Colleague,

Next week, experts from Denmark, Japan, and India will hold three free work=
shops on advanced practice in design innovation at Swinburne Design. All th=
ree workshops are free. Each is limited to 20 participants. We invite resea=
rchers and research students who may be in the Melbourne area to join us. =
=20

The workshops will take place on Monday, 16 January, Tuesday, 17 January, a=
nd Thursday, 19 January. The Monday workshop covers video field studies usi=
ng the cell phone. The Tuesday workshop focuses on idea brokering as a work=
shop technique for innovation. The Thursday workshop is titled "Learning by=
Toying," an experiential workshop relating design, culture, and education.

Because workshops are limited to twenty participants, we ask that those who=
plan to attend register. To register, please contact Brett McIvor at <bmci=
[email protected]>

Best wishes for the New Year.

Ken

Workshop #1

Video Field Studies with your Cell Phone

Monday, 16 January, 1-5pm
Swinburne Faculty of Design
Building PA, Level 2 Gallery,=20
144 High Street, Prahran 3181

Jacob Buur, Director of SPIRE, University of Southern Denmark

Many researchers and practitioners in HCI, Interaction Design, Design Anthr=
opology swear to video when doing field studies of potential users. This is=
due to the power of the media for capturing practices and contexts, convey=
ing empathy, and engaging audiences. Newcomers to the field, and in particu=
lar practitioners from smaller organizations are understandably nervous abo=
ut embarking on video projects out of fear that it is difficult to get cons=
ent in the first place, that the ethics is difficult to handle, that video =
shooting makes the social relations awkward, that the editing task is monum=
ental, that equipment is difficult to handle etc.

This workshop presents a lightweight entry into video field studies using y=
our cell phone and simple computer editing. Jacob Buur's approach has a str=
ong focus on how to use video in design, rather than on the technical side.=
The goal is to engage design teams in meaningful discussions based on user=
empathy, rather than to produce beautiful videos. Basically it is a search=
for a minimalist way of achieving what usually requires trained shooting a=
nd editing with larger equipment.

Jacob Buur is professor of User-Centred Design at the University of Souther=
n Denmark, and research director of the strategic research centre SPIRE. Th=
rough 20 years of practice in industry and academia he has developed video =
techniques for bridging user studies and innovation.

Workshop #2

Idea Brokering, a workshop technique for innovation

Tuesday, 17 January, 9am-12pm
Swinburne Faculty of Design
Building PA, Level 2 Gallery
144 High Street, Prahran 3181

Hiroshi Tamura, Director, i.school, The University of Tokyo. Research Direc=
tor, Innovation Laboratory, Hakuhodo Inc.

The Earthquake and tsunami that took place on March 11th has taken away tho=
usands of lives on that day in Tohoku Region of Japan. Media since then has=
covered the disaster and the consequent Fukushima nuclear accident, howeve=
r, has done so little apart from confusing people with rich yet cryptic dat=
a of little relevance. Yet one thing was certain, which is that we could no=
longer expect changes to take place in this society unless we actively com=
e up with innovations ourselves. Now, the question is: how can we bring tha=
t change?

As practitioners, we find ethnography a perfect source of information to br=
eed ideas for people to act upon. In this workshop, we will introduce a wor=
kshop method called "idea-brokering", which we utilize ethnographic, human-=
centered view to raise awareness on the social issues. An example case woul=
d concern the behavioral and motivational changes of people in Japan that a=
re taking place today. We will then describe key points how the workshop ca=
n be designed and be prepared. Towards the end we will open up the discussi=
on for how we could practice ethnography for social innovation.

We invite participants with experience or interest in esearch in sustainabi=
lity, communications, energy and water, products and services; esearch in c=
orporations or institutions with mild/little practice on human-centered des=
ign or innovations; design for behavioral and motivation change and creativ=
e workshop methods.

Workshop #3

"Learning by Toying"- Experience the fun of relating design, culture & educ=
ation

Thursday, 19 January, 9am-12pm=20
Swinburne Faculty of Design
Building PA, Level 2 Gallery
144 High Street, Prahran 3181

Professor Sudarshan Khanna, Former Principal Designer-Faculty, and Chairman=
of Education & Research at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedab=
ad, India

The workshop has been designed to experience aspects of creativity, innovat=
ion and design methods as part of the process of education. This hands-on w=
orkshop shall reconfirm that simple, interesting playthings are the product=
s of culture and education.

The Workshop will start with an interactive talk. The short introduction wi=
th examples will explain that learning can be fun and a process of experien=
cing the inter-relationship between design, science, technology, socio-cult=
ural contexts and the creative process. A lot can be learned from the toys=
and tales of any society. The participants would make and develop a set of=
dynamic toys out of a sheet of paper. Later, they would be introduced to t=
wo or three toy design concepts. Participants shall make and develop ideas =
by using simple, available materials.
