What if you don't have a suit in that color? Also what if the
worse one is also in that color? I always try to wear neutral 
colors so my client is looking at the artwork, and not me!
I also always show my initial logo concepts in grayscale, 
so the client looks at the idea and doesn't get trapped by 
focusing on a color they hate or love.

As a rule I always show my favorite pick first, and the 
weakest ones last. I also tell the client upfront which one
is best and why. It's better to show 3 strong ideas rather
than 3 strong ones and 7 weak ones - so I always make
sure I can live with the one I hate the most. 

But your retired friend is onto a larger point that is true:
Part of being a good designer is the ability to sell a good
solution as much as creating the artwork.
