This is a topic we are wrestling with here in the Minneapolis chapter of
AIGA...We recently held our first "interactive showcase" called Exhibit A.
(some of you were reviewers for this and I am grateful!)

We intentionally used the DUX model of case study and peer review structure
then we had a couple of "judges" come to town, review the comments of the
review panel select outstanding work talk about it from their various fields
of expertise (brand, interaction design etc...) to create the "event"

Entries were reviewed on their case study info, including results as well as
their final product. So you had to be able to TALK about your work and
whenever applicable give measurements etc...There were 15 entries chosen to
showcase out of about 65 entries. These can be found with their case studies
at:

http://www.aigaminn.org/exhibita/showcase2004.asp

We are beginning to "gear up" for Exhibit A 2005, so I'd love
input/involvement that anyone wants to lend. This was a successful event for
us and we want to keep riding that momentum.

California competition

While DUX is in a awy a competition for the Use Cases, they are
necessarily "the best" examples of solutions, but rather the best case
studies. What would it mean to add to the DUX model a place to do just
that. Not just case studies, but also designs themselves?

Maybe that might up the bar of the experience of DUX itself.

BTW, I loved DUX last time and am really looking forward to the next
one, but I would love to be inspired a bit more in addition to being
intellectually provoked.

I also have to say I really do agree w/ Julie's original point that
"interactive design" is not a single category and I for one am really
put off by the lack of desktop software in there. I mean, for an
example, iTunes couldn't be considered. AND! what about the iPod
itself. Not that I think these are defacto winners, but rather just
great examples of digital, interactive designs worthy of example to
prove a point.

Is AIGA still only focused on the visual aesthetics? And can we have a
competition that includes success criteria such as results, usability,
etc. along side the usual aesthetic criteria. Did a magazine advert
actually generate revenue, web traffic, better brand appeal, etc.?

What if we were to sponsor our own competition? What would the critieria

be? What would be the right, really interesting competition?
