RE: Treeviews and project trees..

By "treeview", I assume you mean hierarchical displays
of folders and files, as in the Windows Explorer
control. 

The problem with these displays tends to be one of
information organization--too often, data that has no
*inherent* hierarchical relationship is organized into
a hierarchy simply for the purposes of displaying it in
this manner. This lazy information organization causes
users to have to re-think the data space, imagining it
in terms that are alien to them.

A better strategy is to find a more appropriate way to
organize the data. Thus, instead of finding a better
way to display hierarchical data, find a way to present
the data so that it is not hierarchical. Once you've
done this, the appropriate display idiom will seem
obvious.

The key to this strategy is to understand the way the
data is structured in the users' mental model, and then
seek to display it thusly.
