Claire:

There are several conferences a year:

The annual IA Summit hosted by SIGIA.
An annual IA retreat hosted by AIfIA/IAI

Additionally, several web design conferences offer programs of interest to IAs:

The annual SXSW always has several UX/IA sessions.

Several other fields closely realted to IA also have conferences. You
can find annual or bi-annual conferences on UX, Search, and Usability.

Face-to-face (F2F) gatherings have started springing up all over the
place as practitioners love to hang out with ike-minds and hash
through new ideas and strategies.

For IA stuff, a good place to start is AIfIA, the Asilomar Institute
for Information Architecture. They do a lot of work in the IA
community.

There's also a fairly comprehensive conference list at InfoDesign (in
the right column):

I hope this was of some help.
