Perhaps a better example would be a battery status monitor... it's
potentially a lot more useful to know you have 20 minutes battery time
remaining, than to have to work it out from an icon that's only showing
a percentage (and not necessarily a particularly accurate one).  

You could put this information in the icon's tooltip of course (and
probably should anyway), but that means you have to interrupt your
workflow by mousing over the icon every time you want to check the
remaining battery time.
