SAM + SA LDAP Patch

I know SA does not offically support LDAP as a backend, but it is 
capable of doing such as discribed in this bug report:

I'm told that over 350 sites are currently using this type of SA + LDAP 
configuration.

My question:  How difficult would it be to write a driver to include 
LDAP support within SAM?
