You are making some sense.  But, so are the others...  This is why I
brought it up.  We're lacking coherent direction.

I understand what you are saying:  In theory, compiled C code is faster
than interpreted PHP code.  But in this case, that is just theory, and
we've no proof that it matches reality.  Maybe we need a real world 
benchmark?

I also like the idea of using the imap_* calls.  But right now, in practice,
they are not giving the performance I'm looking for.
