New Install: sql and folders question

I installed Troll today and have a few questions on the configuration.

In conf.php what does

$conf['news']['mailserver'] =3D '';

do?  What mail server goes in that?  Mine or a mail server related to a
news server?  I'm guessing here because im new to news servers.  This in
backends.php was probably the most confusing...

In preferred what goes there?  My domain or the domain of the news server=
?
 I assume (maybe incorrectly) that hostspec will be "localhost" for my
MySQL server.  But what about logintype?  Is the password supposed to be
the pass for the MySQL db?  I have been unable to get it to write anythin=
g
into the mysql db for Troll.  Also how do I get a subject other than
"Junk" to show up?
