It is caused by a change in wxPython.  2.8.8.1 added a check to the 
config classes to ensure that the app object had been created first in 
order to correct a crashing bug, but that was a bit of overkill since it 
didn't really need it in all situations.  2.8.8.2 will relax the 
restriction to a more appropriate level.
