Unless I misunderstand what you want this works for me on my Vista box.

Just noticed that you are on Linux, so I had a quick try on my Ubuntu 
box and there I can that if I switch back to the shell the cursor is not 
shown.

Maybe your SetFocus call is to early, did you try:

wx.CallAfter(self.shell.SetFocus)
