There are few things more frustrating to a new user than to have to 
start messing with java versions. I agree that most distros ship with at 
least Java 5, but many linux users may be on older versions of their distro.

What about Windows/ Mac users? Windows should be easy enough, installing 
later java versions is usually quite simple. I'm not sure about the 
MacOs versions.

Based on the assumption that the code is forwards compatible, my 
recommendation is to stick with 1.4 until there is a compelling reason 
to change. Thoughts?
