Let him speak if he listens (at least on the list; sorry, it looks
like I sent a doublicated message to the list).  My conjecture is that
his work was funded up to some moment, then the funds went away.

I do not see any need for such change.  What one needs is working
DLLs.  Nobody cares which compiler created them, and in what format.
Using gcc 2.8.1 (for build of these DLLs) is a reasonable decision.

It shows that I never knew the difference.  ;-)

Just an on the cuff estimate of the amount of work to release a new
version.  Couple of match of patching, then couple of months of QA.
But definitely a lot of people can code more during summer.
