I would first get familiar with building GtkAda and GPS from the standard
sources, using e.g. GPS 1.4.0 and GtkAda 2.2.1 from libre.act-europe.fr
following precisely the instructions listed in the INSTALL files.

Once you are at this point, building from CVS is very similar, there are only
a few additional steps needed, that become easy to understand once
the above steps are performed.
