Note that the proper place for such queries is gps-devel.

So I would suggest sending a message there, giving much more information
since you gave no indication as to what you did, where this project is,
how it was generated, etc...

For one thing, you certainly do not need to build from CVS which is
trickier than building from prepackaged sources. So you could certainly
build the GPL version from sources to start with.
