problems associating Komodo with file extensions on Windows

Komodores!

I'm having a problem associating Komodo (7.0.1) with file extensions on 
my Windows 7 machine. I see both bug 80777 
<http://bugs.activestate.com/show_bug.cgi?id=80777> (can't associate 
extension with Komodo using Windows' "Open with" dialog) and the problem 
reported in this forum thread 
<http://support.activestate.com/forum-topic/file-associations> (setting 
associations from Komodo's Windows Integration prefpane throws "access 
is denied").

Suggested workarounds in the bug and thread are some complex registry 
hacking, which seems prohibitively hard for all the extensions I want to 
associate (i.e. all of them), and setting associations in Komodo while 
running it as an administrator, which apparently had some negative 
consequences for the guy who tried it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for simpler workarounds or fixes?
