Re: . files

If you're talking about the Places panel, you could either choose
the "View All" view, to see all files, or create a custom view.
To do that, left-click on the cog, select "Manage Views...",
then click on "New", give your filter a new name, and then, in this
case, I would simply remove ".*" from the exclusion list.

Note that you can also modify the default view in
"Preferences/Places/Specify the default view filters"
