At www.di.unito.it/~sacco you can find an analysis of dynamic
taxonomies wrt traditional taxonomies (e.g. monodimensional
classification schemes) validated by experiments. 

With 114,042 documents described by 1100 concepts (each document
classified under 11.19 topics on the average), the avg. result size
with a traditional taxonomy is 1246.22 documents. The user has to
manually scan that many documents (no real user is likely to).
With dynamic taxonomies, a single zoom operation reduces this quantity
to 27.68.
