I am very interested to read the discussion in this group. Thank you
to Phil for the link from the kmconnection page. I am writing to
introduce myself.

I am an engineering academic at the University of Bath in the UK,
having recently moved from the University of Bristol. My research
interests for some years have been in engineering information
organisation, particularly for engineering design. I am especially
interested in organisation of the unstructured information that
designers use in the course of their work. Our research brought us
to classification of documents into multiple nodes in hierarchies
with dynamic updating of the classification display based on user
selection (we first used dynamic updating about 10 years ago, but at
that time with selectable attributes rather than hierarchically
decomposed nodes). We built a software demonstrator that is still
running at Bristol at http://nzm.dig.bris.ac.uk. There are three
demonstrations at this site – advertisements for cars, legislation
from the UK parliament and papers from an academic conference
(confidentiality with our collaborators prevents use of engineering
examples). Our classification approach is not very "pure" in faceted
classification terms (although the second hand car database is the
closest), but I hope the demonstrators show that the software could
be used for faceted classification. Since doing the work we are
finding out a good deal about faceted classification, thanks in no
small part to this community here! Classification in our systems is
done using classification rules with a home-grown classification
engine. We are currently working on further exploitation of the
approach in engineering and other information organisation
applications.
