Hello. My name is David Riecks. I've been working for the past several years, with classification lists in the form of data trees. However, the concept of facet classification is a new one to me. I've read through the 120 some posts so far, and realize there is much here to absorb. Unlike many of you, I have no idea even what the difference is between the "Boyce-Codd normal form" and a "red black tree data structure", or even how they might be useful to me in my work. My primary interest is building lists of hierarchical controlled vocabulary used to describe images within an image database. I'm interested to see how facet classification can be used to enhance these lists. If I understand the definition, I may be using a hybrid of facet classification for the past 4-5 years... I just didn't have a name for it. I have no formal Library/Information Science credentials, (my background is communications and photography) just lots of research on my own, applying it to the work I've done with image databases. Much of what I've found I've compiled into the Controlled Vocabulary website. In fact I "stumbled" across a reference to this list while "back surfing" inbound links to that site (http://www.ControlledVocabulary.com/). I'm interested in figuring out what tools are out there to efficiently build better hierarchical classification lists of controlled vocabulary. The XFML format sounds very interesting as a means of exchanging classification lists, and was pleased to see that there are a few products that may be adding that in their next iterations. It sounds like this might be another means of organizing these descriptors for manipulation & retrieval. I'm looking forward to learning from the rest of you, and hoping I can add something of value.
