This may be a little off topic, but I think it does come back to the topic 
at hand.

There is a new utility for adding meta-data to images using the IPTC 
standard (International Press and Telecommunications Council). This utility 
would be of interest to anyone building image databases, because the image 
objects themselves can carry the meta data in a way that it can be 
exchanged with image editors like Adobe Photoshop (using the File>> File 
Info feature) or image databases (like Canto Cumulus or Extensis Portfolio).

However the feature that would be of interest to the group here, is the 
integrated "keyword catalog." It's essentially a "data-tree" creator with a 
built in search function. It also allows you to tie in "synonyms" (aka See 
Also), and you can narrow down your subject area several classification 
levels (I believe they say it's "unlimited" but I've not tested it beyond 
about seven or 8 levels).

I've been beta-testing it for the company and think this module alone could 
have several uses beyond their original intentions. If anyone wants to take 
a look at what I'm talking about you can download the 1.1 version of the 
"Image Info Toolkit" software from 
(http://www.picturefinder.com/software/iit/download/welcome.html). It will 
allow you to embed info in 200 images in the demo mode before asking for a 
serial number. It's authored  using the 4D database, and thus requires no 
actual installation. Versions are available for both windows and mac, in 
English and German.

The current version allows you to "export" the "keyword catalog" data so 
that you can retain data trees you have created and either exchange it with 
other users (or move it to multiple machines). I've already passed on 
information to the programmer about the XFML site, and will encourage him 
to consider adding this format for exporting and importing.

If I understand correctly, having XFML as an export format would allow 
users to view the tree in any compatible browser. So I guess the next 
question is what browsers are compatible with this format?

If anyone has any feedback about their experience with this utility, I'd be 
interested in hearing from you, and glad to pass it on to the developers.
