One of the things I like about faceted classification is that it's
not just about content keywords, it's a whole constellation of
things. So for example this photographic would also have boring but
incredibly useful facets like file size, dimensions, date,
photographer, dominant colors, location, DRM info... And all those
would be searchable and browsable interactively, because they're
valuable aspects that a person would need when dealing with those
images.
Take a look at Flamenco, Endeca, i411 and Siderean for excellent
implementations of faceted metadata search/browse
