Not me, but here's my take. It seems like a simple hierarchic taxonomy (even with facets) wouldn't fit your purpose. Sounds like you need a more complex structure. It's a great case study though. You should post it on the web somewhere. Then people could try to solve the problem with different approaches (topicmaps, RDF, faceted a la XFML, relational databases, ...).
