Hi All,

Anyone interested in digital photography might like to know that ACDSee
6.0 allows the user to define categories that can be used like facets.
You can tag each image with any number of categories and then use them
to filter and search your photo collection. The out-of-the-box
categories are:

     Albums
     People
     Places
     Various
     --
     Write Disc

but you can add your own top level categories and sub-categories. For
instance, I can define a hierarchy under People that looks like:

People
   Hallam Family
     Kid1
     Kid2
     Wife
     Self

There is also a mechanism for specifying dates or date ranges based on
the image capture date, and when searching you also have access to a
vast array of metadata obtained from EXIF tags and file attributes.

Individual photos or groups of photos can be classified by selecting
them and then clicking on the appropriate category. To find photos that
match particular categories you check a box in front of each category
and your photo list is automatically filtered.

The only minor problem I found with searching/filtering using the
categories is that you have a choice of "match all" (AND) or "match any"
(OR) that applies across all categories, regardless of their place in
the hierarchy. I cannot see a way to define a filter that will find all
photos matching:

(Taken this month) AND (contains Kid1 *OR* Kid2)
     AND (was taken at Home)

The software seems to force me to use:

(Taken this month) AND (contains Kid1)
*AND* (contains Kid2) *AND* (was taken at Home)

or

(Taken this month) OR (contains Kid1) OR
(contains Kid2) OR (was taken at Home)

However, if I select Hallam Family I can automatically get matches for
all sub-categories.

It will be interesting to see how the software, and the user, cope with
a growing number of images.
