Introductions

Hi Guys,

I am Library and Information Science student (undergrad). I am 
working on applying faceted classification to improve a specialized 
online encyclopedia. I can see that it is pretty straightforward - 
identify facets, sub-facets, and the foci; and then provide a 
retrieval mechanism based on the relationships of foci (or classes). 
I have one dilemma though: what if several foci under a given facet 
apply to an entitiy being classified? 

Say, we are preparing a classification scheme for containers. Under 
the facet "material" (or what if is made of), there are the 
foci "steel", "glass", "wood" - and we need to classify a certain 
container that is made of a combination of these materials. Do we 
define additional foci under the facet (e.g. "glass and wood")? This 
could be tricky especially for entities made or defined by complex 
combinations. Or should the adjustment be made at the database 
structure?

Forgive me for the long introduction. Any ideas though? Links to  
readings and other helpful materials will be much appreciated.
