Dear InfoDesign community, I would like to inform you concerning our Information Design Symposium in Stuttgart, Germany. Beauty Matters! Usability and Aesthetics, November 27, 2008 I think it could be very interesting for you and we would be happy to meet you in Stuttgart. Best regards Michael Burmester Stuttgart Media University, Germany [email protected] Apologies for cross-postings ------------------------------ Beauty Matters! Usability and Aesthetics 7th Information Design Symposium Thursday, November 27, 2008, Stuttgart Media University Interactive technologies are close to ubiquitous. From everyday products such as mobile phones, entertainment and work applications of the web to machines or medical systems many products require the interaction of people with technology. Obviously, these products have to be designed in a way to be understood and used easily. It is thus not surprising that a products usability and the corresponding methods and processes to achieve it become more and more important. This is good in itself, however, many feel that something important is missing. A quality that is crucial but at the same time elusive and hard to grasp with current engineering methods and processes beauty. The study of beauty in interactive products has many open questions, such as: Does beauty solely lie in the eye of the beholder or can it be objectified? Do users of interactive products care about beauty at all? What human needs are satisfied by beauty? What is the structure of an aesthetic experience? Can we design beauty in a systematic way, or is it just gut feeling? Do people pay for beauty? Are they more creative when working with beautiful products? Etc. The 7th International Information Design Symposium Beauty Matters! Usability and Aesthetics will give answers to these questions. Two goals are to be achieved: to make beauty graspable within a product development process and to make sure that using future interactive products will become an aesthetic experience. Speakers Paul Hekkert (Delft University) What is beneficial is pleasant Thomas Jacobsen (Leipzig University) Neuro-cognitive psychology of aesthetics Meinald T.
