We make rules, break them and make new ones in grammar and many other things. But it is sad when a useful rule gets dropped, though I'm not convinced this is one of those cases. The context is non-possessive. Much worse is the misuse of apostrophes for emphasis as in the following on a poster outside a church at Christmas. COME AND SEE CAROL'S BY CANDLE LlGHT!
