(Just when I was getting ready to reply to Conrad, I had a family 
crisis to deal with, and am now trying to get caught up with a large 
backlog of e-mail.)

I need a few days yet to get my head back into C17 intellectual 
history, at which time I can respond more thoughtfully to the many 
interesting issues Conrad (and others, who have written me privately) 
have raised.
