URA ‘23 - The Second International Workshop on Understanding Reading Activities at MMM’23
Bergen, Norway, January 13th 2023

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Reading is one of the most common everyday activities and the means through which most of our learning and education takes place. Notwithstanding the importance of reading in our daily lives, thus far, there has been little consideration of how people read information within the MMM community.  This workshop aims to bring together academics and practitioners with an interest in reading activities to define the state-of-the-art, and to explore future research opportunities.

URA’23 is being configured as a hybrid participation workshop, in which participants (either physical or virtual) are invited to discuss their interest in reading analytics, guided by the following indicative (non-exhaustive) list of topics of interest:Reading and human memory / comprehension / learning;Multimedia analytics of reading activities;Analysing reading quality;Sensor analytics to detect reading events and content consumed;HCI issues relating to reading on screen or paper;Experiences of experiments into reading and reading comprehension;Typographical issues relating to reading and reading comprehension.

The expected outcomes of the workshop include:A new community of researchers interested in the topic of reading analytics;A co-authored position paper on the topic of reading analytics, to be submitted to an appropriate journal in late 2023;A published volume of position / research papers on the topic from attendees, edited by the organisers;A proposal for datasets to support comparative evaluation of research within the domain of understanding reading activities.

Submission Details:Participants are invited, but not required, to submit a 1-page abstract related to any of the topics of interest above using the URA’23 Easychair submission site (https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=ura23). All submissions will be peer reviewed by an international committee and feedback will be provided. Submissions should be in the English language and formatted according to the IEEE official two column format (https://www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/ieee-conference-template/grfzhhncsfqn).
