------------------------------------------------------------ Invitation to Tender for Hosting of ESSIR 2009 Summer School The Steering Committee of the European Summer School on Information Retrieval (ESSIR) invites interested parties to submit bids to host ESSIR in 2009. Further details on ESSIR can be found at http://ims.dei.unipd.it/essir/home.html ESSIR is a five-day Summer school (Monday to Friday), which is now organized every 2 years. The target audience of the Summer School are advanced undergraduate students, PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and academic and industrial researchers and developers. The ESSIR Summer School gives participants a grounding in the core subjects of IR - architectures, algorithms, formal theoretical models of IR, and evaluation - as well as covering the development of some of the more recent topics. ESSIR 2009 will be the 7th European School in Information Retrieval. The first one, ESSIR'90 was organised by the University of Padova (Prof. Maristella Agosti) and was held in Bressanone, Italy, in 1990. The 2nd ESSIR (http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/essir/) was organised by the University of Glasgow (Prof. Keith van Rijsbergen) and held in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1995, in conjunction with the BCS Colloquium in Information Retrieval, an IRIDES project meeting, and the final MIRO workshop. The 3rd ESSIR (http://www.itim.mi.cnr.it/Eventi/essir2000/ index.htm) was organised by Dr. Gabriela Pasi, Prof. Maristella Agosti and Prof. Fabio Crestani, and took place in Varenna, Italy, in 2000. The 4th ESSIR (http://www-clips.imag.fr/mrim/essir03/) was held in Aussois, France and organised by Prof. Yves Chiaramella and Prof. Catherine Berrut. ESSIR 2005 was held in Dublin, Ireland and organized by Prof. Alan Smeaton (http://www.cdvp.dcu.ie/ESSIR2005/). ESSIR 2007 was in Glasgow, Scotland, organised by Dr. Iadh Ounis (http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/essir2007/) Parties interested in hosting ESSIR 2009 are invited to submit proposals by email to Alan Smeaton ([email protected] ), by Monday 22 October 2007. Evaluation of proposals will take into account the proposed Summer School venue, timing and location, programme, likely financial viability and plans for organization and publicity. Proposals should also take into consideration the successful BCS IRSG Symposium on: "Future Directions in Information Access 2007" which was incorporated into ESSIR 2007 in order to provide a forum for early-stage researchers to share and discuss their research. --------
