Research Fellow: Context-sensitive and Multimedia Search
(Temporary appointment, up to 36 months - Vacancy ID:4063)

The Open University's Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) has an opening for
a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to undertake research within the context
of an EPSRC-funded project, Renaissance, which aims to investigate
context-sensitive information retrieval based on quantum theory, with
applications to cross-media search and structured document access. Based
on Professor Keith van Rijsbergen's pioneering work in quantum-theory
based framework for information retrieval, this is a joint project
between the Open University, the University of Glasgow and Queen Mary
University of London. The Open University will mainly focus on
contributing to the development of a unified framework for the
representation, evolution and interaction of contexts, implementing and
evaluating the framework in large scale multimedia search tasks, such as
TRECVID and INEX Multimedia Track.

You should have a PhD, strong publication record, and R&D experience in
information retrieval models, multimedia information retrieval systems
and/or multimedia databases. Strong theoretical background in
mathematics and strong programming skills in C/C++, MATLAB and/or JAVA
are essential. Background in physics will be a plus.

Each appointment will be made on the Academic and Research Staff salary
scale (Academic Grade 2), ranging from GBP 27,466 - GBP 32,796 pa
depending on qualifications and experience. Appointment as a Research
Fellow requires a PhD.

The Knowledge Media Institute is a highly successful, 79-strong
interdisciplinary laboratory founded at The Open University in 1995, and
located in attractive new offices at The Open University's main campus
in Milton Keynes, UK. KMi undertakes high-profile advanced research and
development in Knowledge Media: a convergence of knowledge,
communication and computing technologies. We offer a stimulating
environment, widely acknowledged to be at the leading edge of European
research and development, particularly in semantic web technologies,
multimedia information systems, knowledge modelling and management, new
media systems, and human-computer interaction. The style, impact and
content of our work are described in detail in our Web pages at
