                   CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The second Russian Summer School in Information Retrieval will be held
September 1-5, 2008 in Taganrog, Russia. The first RuSSIR took place in
Ekaterinburg, Russia in September 2007 (see http://romip.ru/russir2007/)
and was a big success.

The mission of the school is to make students familiar with a wide range
of modern problems and methods in Information Retrieval; to stimulate
scientific research in the field of Information Retrieval and to create
a site for informal contacts among scientists, students and industry
professionals.

The target audience of the Summer School is advanced graduate and PhD
students, post-doctoral researchers, academic and industrial researchers
and developers. The participants are expected to know basics of
mathematics and computer science at university program level and have
general understanding of problems and methods in Information Retrieval.
The school will host approximately 100 participants this year. The
official languages of the school are English and Russian.

The main program of the school consists of four courses (five lectures
each):

Maxim Gubin (Ask.com, USA)
Data Structures in Information Retrieval

Marie-Francine Moens (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium)
Text Mining, Information and Fact Extraction

Horacio Saggion (University of Sheffield, UK)
Hands-on Natural Language Processing for Information Access
Applications

Natalia Vassilieva (HP Labs, Russia)
Content Based Image Retrieval

as well as a short course (two lectures):
Matthew Hurst, Alek Kolcz, Alexey Maykov (Live Labs, USA)
Information Retrieval in Social Media

Futher evening lectures and a panel discussion are planned. The Russian
Conference for Young Scientists in Information Retrieval will be
co-organized with the school. The school is expected to have a versatile
social program.

The Program Committee will form the body of participants based on
received applications. Participation in the school is free of charge.
All students will get free handout materials, coffee breaks, and
participation in social events. The Organizing Committee established a
limited number of grants covering participants' accommodation and/or
travel expenses. It is the participant's responsibility to get a Russian
visa if needed. For visa support letters, please send all
requests to Alexander Goncharov ag[dot]tsure[at]gmail[dot]com. Additional
