Two Research Associate positions are available to work in the field of
geographical information retrieval.

Post 1 is funded by and collaborative with the Ordnance Survey, UK. This
project aims to lay the foundation for the development of a new type of
digital gazetteer that maintains knowledge of vernacular, imprecise place
names such as the West Country, and the Midlands. Vernacular names of
places are commonly used in queries to web-based geographical information
facilities.

The main tasks of the post are as follows:
* design and implement web-based questionnaire methods to elicit common
perceptions of the geographical extent associated with place names;
* develop geometric modelling techniques that incorporate uncertainty to
generate digital geometric footprints of places, based on the acquired
knowledge and on existing topographic terrain data;
* apply the methods at a UK national scale and create an experimental
intelligent gazetteer to maintain and exploit the acquired place name
knowledge;
* write regular progress reports, give presentations on your research and
write and submit academic articles for conferences and journal publication.

Post 2 will work on a collaborative EC-funded project dedicated to
developing methods to create rich descriptions of images for purposes of
information retrieval.  The project is concerned with archived images, for
which the existing captions will be enhanced, and images created by
location-aware cameras for which captions will be generated.

The main tasks of the post are:
* to design, implement and evaluate an experimental place name ontology
containing knowledge of the terminology of place names and landmarks;
* to assist in the development of an experimental image search engine that
exploits the ontology resources;
* collaborate with other researchers on the exploitation of 3D urban
models, the acquisition and exploitation of knowledge of vernacular place
names and the interpretation and generation of captions for images;
* to write regular research progress reports, including project
deliverables, give presentations on your research and to write and submit
academic articles for conferences and journal publication.

Both posts are fixed-term 3 year appointments and require research
experience to PhD level with a substantial element of computer science.

Salary:
Post 1: £21467 - £24886 (UK pounds) per annum (Vacancy No: 0747)
Post 2: £26402 - £31525 (UK pounds) per annum (Vacancy No: 0748)
