Note. Posted to the Peirce List in response to a discussion that began with a question from John Quay about the origin of the term "community of inquiry". That barrel of monkeys known as Apple, AT&T, and Yahoo! has ozoned most of my mail this week, so I'll have to try and catch up with the Gmane archive later ... At any rate, the relation between Interpretation and Inquiry was the subject of a paper that Susan Awbrey and I wrote for a conference on Hermeneutics in 1992 and published in 1995. Awbrey, J.L., and Awbrey, S.M. (Autumn 1995), “Interpretation as Action : The Risk of Inquiry”, Inquiry : Critical Thinking Across the Disciplines 15(1), pp. 40–52. http://mywikibiz.com/Directory:Jon_Awbrey#Presentations_and_Publications http://web.archive.org/web/19970626071826/http://chss.montclair.edu/inquiry/fall95/awbrey.html I have not seen much in the way of progress with the problems of incommensurable paradigms that Quine very tellingly described as the "Radical Indeterminacy Of Translation" (RIOT), all of which many of us have been discussing since the turn of millennium on the Peirce List and many other forums concerned with everything from cybernetics, information theory, logic, and semantics to ontology and beyond. Looking back over that span of experience -- like a lot of experience, learning more about the blocks to progress than viable ways forward -- I think it's safe to say that we won't make much headway without first coming to understand triadic relations, in particular sign relations, much better than we currently do.
