There have been thinkers who thought to deduce the world of phenomena
from a system of categories à priori, but I do not think Peirce is one
of those thinkers.  If we push our reading of Peirce back a couple years
before the "New List of Categories" to the Harvard and Lowell Lectures of
1865–1866, we find Peirce already engaged in trying to comprehend the full
logic of scientific inquiry — abductive, deductive, inductive — as conducted
within the context of concrete sign relations. It was the task of understanding
how science works, as it appears to do, that drove Peirce's advances in the logic
of relatives and the theory of signs.
