Thanks for the wealth of historical data!  So far I've had only the vaguest hunch that some sort of 
zeitgeist was in the air at that moment in the development of mathematical thought, but I've never 
been able to check it out.  Looking forward to going through your material in more detail later this 
weekend or Monday.
