I used to gobble up paperback popularizations of math and science subjects like candy all through 
junior high and high school.  There were many good writers among 1st-rate scientists and educators, 
people like Irving Adler, Isaac Asimov, Arthur Clarke, George Gamov, and a host of others.  I think 
it was Adler's ''New Mathematics'' or Asimov's ''Realm of Algebra'' that recommended Birkhoff and 
Mac Lane's ''Survey of Modern Algebra'' as a further reading, so I snapped that up shortly after 
when I saw it in the Texas Tech bookstore up the road.  (It was one of the places my nerd friends 
and I used to haunt during summer band camp, admiring all the fancy slide rules and drafting tools.)
