Post : Peirce's 1870 “Logic Of Relatives” • Comment 9.5 http://inquiryintoinquiry.com/2014/03/04/peirces-1870-logic-of-relatives-%e2%80%a2-comment-9-5/ Posted : March 4, 2014 at 4:00 pm Author : Jon Awbrey Peircers, Selection 8 (CP 3.73) and Selection (CP 3.74) introduce Peirce's “comma operation”, which converts an absolute term into a simple relative term and more generally ups the “adicity” (arity, valence) of any term by 1. Peirce uses the comma operation to define logical conjunction and also to show that the form of conjunction defined in this way is commutative, as one would naturally expect. Comment 9.5 on Selection 9 demonstrates two different ways of viewing the action of Peirce's comma operation on absolute terms, first via logical matrices and then using “bigraphs” (bipartite graphs) to represent the resulting dyadic relations.
