Try uninstalling the firewire drivers. On reboot, it will auto detect and install. 
Then re-apply the update.

If that still doesn't work, try changing slot. Or better yet, try different card(s).

The combination Windows+FireWire+iPod can sometimes be a risky 
game. The Adaptec should be a nice card. However, what works 
wonders for some is a nightmare for others.
