How does Audible work?

OK, so I ventured into the world of Audible for the first time, and ran into a couple problems. First, I didn't sign up for anything -- i just downloaded a couple samples (two small Robin Williams clips). These appeared fine in the Audible client software. That same software seemed to know about my iPod, and it correctly downloaded the clips onto my iPod -- they appeared in the list and everything. They just didn't play. So I'm wondering how I can make Ephpod handle these tracks or make them come alive, or if there's something different I need to do in the Audible software to enable playback. I'm on a 20G Win iPod. Also -- does anyone know what bitrate format 4 (the largest) is encoded at?
