Well, m4a's transfer and play, at least ones encoded with the PsyTel
aacenc_mpeg4.exe encoder do.  I used the these switches, recommended by
Richard over at hydrogenaudio: -vbrhi -br 100 -c 16500

This produced an acceptable sounding file (with my sample, anyway) that was
about 4% smaller than a high quality VBR Lame encoded mp3.

The packaging to MP4 was done via MP4UI and the MP4 was just renamed to M4A.

EphPod happily accepted the file and after fixing up DB tags, I had no
trouble browsing to it and playing it.

Does anyone know of a command-line aac->mp4 utility that produces MP4s that
will play on the iPod?  Or do we need to wait until a new version of
mp4creator60.exe is out?

I do have a couple of nit-picky observations, and I hesitate to mention them
(especially within a 1/2 hour of you making this new version
available)...but anyway:

When copying an m4a off the iPod to a directory via EphPod 270a, EphPod
tacks a ".mp3" extension onto the file, e.g. "01 - Track One.m4a.mp3"  ..a
by product, I guess, of the "Naming Convention" from the advanced options
tab.

Also, when Ephpod gets tagless files dropped on it, how about looking at
that "Naming Convention for Copied Songs" template for a clue as to a guess
at tags?  The convention I use is "%G\%a\%L\%n - %t":
Genre\Artist\Album\Trackno - Title, and I try to be consistent at naming
(and tagging) my files to that format.  While we wait for an MP4/M4A tagging
tool, this potentially would save us some labor, and make m4a transfers alot
easier.

Following changes (and probably others I have forgotten):

2.70:+Added support for m4a/m4p (mpeg-4 audio) files.  Tagging as done by
Apple is supported.

     +Support for cascading track numbers when quick-editing multiple rows

If you're not running firmware v1.3, you're not going to be able to hear
the m4as... unless, of course, apple enabled that in an older version of
the firmware, a la the windows support...

I am allowing you to pick both .m4a and .m4p files.  That's because Apple
is ripping CDs into files with the .m4p extension on my iTunes 4.

I am not supporting the .mp4 extension because it's not exactly like the
.m4as.  I have half-written a program to "convert" the .mp4 to .m4a files,
and it will take tag information (i.e. mp42m4a.exe song.mp4 song.m4a
artist = "So and So").  Would anyone be interested in me finishing this
program?

Next step is to fix up the website.  Then I'll take your feedback on this
version and probably implement some of that stuff that's been languishing.
