I would buy a Firewire card (actually I have one for a desktop if you're 
interested.  Never been used.  I bought a Firewire PC card for my laptop.)

Yes.  I couldn't find this information on the Apple site, but I know 
someone who works at Apple and she checked and said that yes you can.  (I'm 
thinking I may get a Powerbook once my current PC runs its course).

No, only the PC... "USB 2.0 connection is for Windows PCs only; requires 
USB 2.0 + FireWire Cable and free software update (available in June)."

I got the sense that it was a process involved.  I guess reformatting was 
the word.  It wasn't like you could just plug it in to a Mac and then a PC 
and then a Mac again

Reformatting your iPod for Mac to work with Windows is an unsupported 
operation.  Using the iPod for Mac on a PC, or using the iPod for Windows 
on a Mac, is not supported by Apple.
