AAC/MPEG-4 frequency response

Anyone else noticed this? When I play AAC/MPEG-4 files, the "spectrum analyser" in Nero Wave Editor and in WinAmp seem to indicate that there are no frequencies beyond about 10-12k being played. When I play MP3 files, the entire "spectrum analyser" seems to be used. Is there some sort of low-pass filter used in the Nero AAC/MPEG-4 file encoder, so that I'm losing the top-end of all my songs? I have noticed that my M4A files on my iPod seem to be lacking in treble (more bass-oriented) -- especially on Rush CDs, there are no real cymbal crashes.
