I guess it could be the cable, but...

If you forced the firewire connector into the Ipod the wrong way, while
active ( i.e. power to the firewire port ) I would fear the electronics that
supports firewire inside the Ipod is damaged. Especially if it doesn't
propoerly connect to the PC/Mac now.

Hope it is still under warranty...I wouldn't tell them I plugged it in
backwards though.
