Most PCMCI firewire adaptors don't provide power, even if they use 6pin to
6pin cables, so no, you shouldn't expect the iPod to charge.  This is true
of the Adaptec FireConnect card that I use, too.

Re songs getting cut off: try repairing the VBR header using MP3TagStudio:
http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts/

..and then transfer the files again and see if that helps.  It often helps
for me.
