Question - Upgrading from an Original 5GB to 30gb

Hello All,

About six months after the original iPod came out I 
bought a brand new 5gb and installed a firewire card in
my computer and in 20 minutes I was uploading mp3's

The battery now lasts about 3.5 hours without the
backlight on.

So, I just bought on ebay a sealed 30gb for 448.99
including shipping, I couldn't resisr, the main
question is:

Do I have to load the piece of crap apple software or
can I just plug it in and ephpod will find it?
