This is typically a driver problem, not ephpod's fault. I had this too.
Here's what you do:

1/ Go to start -> settings -> control panel -> system -> device manager
2/ find your IEEE1394 (firewire) addapter in the list
3/ Remove it (from the list).
4/ Reboot. 

With a little luck your computer will detect an unknown firewire port
again and reinstall the appropriate drivers.

It MIGHT be (this was the case with me) that your vendor software has
installed drivers that are really worse than the drivers provided by
windows. If that's the case you might need to remove the vendor's ".inf"
file so that the standard windows drivers will take over.

Or the reverse might be true (heh) in which case you should go do your
vendor's page and download and install their latest drivers. Perhaps you should
try this first.

Oh and one more note (hey, you asked), if you have a sound blaster
audigy it might be something else entirely. In that case first try to
set PCI latency to a higher setting in your BIOS.

<DISCLAIMER> Windows is windows and might booboo at any given minute.
I've done the above procedure 4 with absolute succes in windows ME and
XP so far, but I won't guarantee that it'll actually work for you.
(though worst case scenario will be that you still won't get any ipod
connection, the rest of your computer will be fine).

Anyway backing up your entire system with Norton Ghost (for example) is
a Really Good Idea (tm) in such cases.
