Following up, iTunes is writing id3v1 numeric genre tags +1 in the gnre field, based on the files I've seen and reports from others (the udta atom layout you posted a while back included a one byte gnre field). Apple provides for a (c)gen field for text genre fields, but EphPod does not appear to read these either.
