A friend of mine just got a brand new 40Gb Win iPod. He's been having
trouble getting windows XP to recognize it correctly. Can anyone here
help?

Thanks

OK, here goes:

OS: winXP Pro SP1

All the iPod software installed. When I plug the iPod in (either via USB or
1394) the OS "aquires" the device and it shows up in explorer for about 10
seconds. After about 10 seconds the device is simply dropped by the OS -
there is no evidence that it is plugged in and the iPod goes back to "menu"
mode. Its as though I removed it.

There is a work around. When its in the above state (plugged in but not
recognized by the OS), I can run the "install new hardware wizard". When I
get to the "pick your hardware" screen, I can select the Apple iPod (so
obviously something knows its there). Next screen says "you don't need to do
anything, that device is working properly". Then, voila, the OS sees it and
I can download songs.

So, yes I can get it to work, but i don't want to have to run the new
hardware wizard everytime i plug it in.
